What Makes Washington Unique?
Heritage Language Program (HLP)
Washington Elementary School will offer a Heritage Language Program to all the families living in the school attendance area. This model of dual language education will be a whole school model beginning with Kindergarten. In this One Way program, the participating language group consists of the attendance area families which are predominantly of Hispanic heritage. The target language for this program model is Spanish. In this program, the percentages of target language instruction versus English language instruction does vary slightly. The Heritage Language Program will use an 80/20 Instructional model for Kindergarten through second grade. For the first three years, the children will receive 80% of their instruction in Spanish, focusing on foundational literacy in Spanish first, and 20% of their day will be taught in English. After the initial years of 80/20 instruction, the program will move to a 70/30 language distribution, falling in line with the same language distribution as the DLI program in third grade.
Student must reside within the Washington Elementary school boundaries.
