FAFSA Letter to Parents
You are receiving this letter because your child is a 12th grade student at Madera Unified School District. We would like to strongly encourage all 12th grade students to complete the Federal Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). 12th graders who complete the FAFSA by March 2nd will be considered for the Cal Grant or Middle Class Scholarship award. These state grants represent free money to assist students in pursuing higher education. The state requires school districts to submit 12th grade students grade point averages to the California Student Aid Commission to allow students to be eligible to qualify and receive these funds for post-secondary education. Please contact your child's counselor if you would like to have your child opt out of the GPA submission process.
If you have questions or require assistance on the FAFSA application process, please contact your child's respective school counselor and the counselor will assist you with this process.

Furman High School is Madera Unified's
Independent Study Program
Duane E Furman High School (FHS) was founded in 1987 as an independent study high school to provide an alternative school for students in Madera. Students at Furman can continue their education while working to develop the skills, habits and attitudes that will allow them to be successful in pursuing their life goals.
At Furman the teacher and student meet in person at designated appointment times. The teacher gives the student books and materials with instructions and assigns the student 20 or more hours of school work each week. The work is to be completed by the student before the next appointment. At that time the completed work is evaluated and graded by the teacher.
